"We know there's two Microsoft Updates website and these are located in: windowsupdate.microsoft.com update.microsoft.com
Don't use Windowsupdate.microsoft.com but use update.microsoft.com only. Don't use windowsupdate.microsoft.com even if you don't have Microsoft Office products installed (For people using MS Office products, Microsoft Office Updates is now in Microsoft Update only). Why? Simple reason: You are not protected with security patches if you are only using windowsupdate.microsoft.com. You are protected with security patches if you will use update.microsoft.com"
This is directed at those, like me, who prefer not to enable Automatic Updates, but to manually update patches. I have used Microsoft Updates (MSU) for years, because the Windows Update (WU) site did not update my MS Office programs, unlike MSU which updates both. I was not aware that WU was also not offering all security patches, as outlined by Donna in the link above, hence this post.
For most who don't want the hassle of manual updates, I still think that enabling Automatic Updates is the way to go. It will deliver all patches.
Just a warning, dont use Dell's website for updates either, they will not help you when they crash your motherboard..best to just go to each of the manufacturers of the products inside your dell..
I lost thousands of dollars when they dell website killed my computer last year, and they have done nothing but simply make me even more angry..good luck!
Thanks for the tip, Joe. I'm overdue for a trip myself - wonder why MS keeps them separate when they've woven themselves into so much more than just the OS.
Have mine set to "notify only" before either download or install, and problems that popped up after the last MS Tuesday left me wary, so I unchecked a couple to see how it played out.
I know, I know - 2 weeks later I'm still dragging my heels. :emotion-10:
Interesting reading. Now, I suppose that is for users who type the URL for Windowsupdate and not update.Microsoft because I have in Start > All Programs > Windows Update (link), also in my IE toolbar in my security section I have a Windows Update link, and both of those links take me to the same URL that Microsoft Update takes me, that is:
I also tried it on a really old computer that had WU pinned to the Start Menu. Same redirect to Microsoft Update happened. I'm not sure who would type in the URL, but whatever... :emotion-42:
If memory serves me, at some point, Windows Update "strongly suggested" (I'm not sure if it actually "required") that users "opt-in" to Microsoft Update. For those who have done so, WU automatically re-directs to MU. But conceivably, for those who didn't opt-in to the suggested update when offered, they might still see the two separate sites. (Just speculating here, not 100% sure)
