Hijack this log - PLEASE HELP ME!!

For the past few days while online several ads will pop-up and their icons added to my desktop.  Also, AOL 9.0 virus scan keeps bringing up several different viruses that it says it has cleaned and deleted.  Unfortunately - I lost my piece of paper saying which kinds of viruses.  I remember seeing the words Trojan and Download a few times!!  I cannot log onto some websites at all, and others just freeze up.  Then sometimes things run smoothyly.  Something is not right!  I have never done this before and would GREATLY appreciate anyone's help!!!!

    Hi adoretrace...

    My name is dobhar and I will be looking over your log.

    I need you to do a couple things for me first.  I see that your running an old version of HijackThis and that you are running it from the root of C:\. HijackThis should be run from a folder on it's own and not from the Desktop. Please follow the instructions below to download the latest version and to save it to it's own folder.

    Download the latest HijackThis version 1.99.1 from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe
    - Save it on the root of your C: Drive to a folder called HJT or HijackThis
    - To create the folder...
    1. Open "My Computer"
    2. Double-click "C:" or "Local Disk (C: )"
    3. Right-click in an open area in that window
    4. Select/left-click on "New" from the drop-down
    5. Select/left-click on "Folder"
    6. A folder will appear with the cursor blinking and the words "New Folder" will be highlighted
    7. Name the folder HJT or HijackThis

    Post a new HJT log using the new version and then give me some time to go look it over. I will post back as soon as possible. If you have any questions post them back in this thread do not start another.

    Thanks,

    Dobhar-

    Thank you so much for your help!!!  I followed your instructions and a message came up saying:

    C:\C HijackThis.exe is not a valid win32 application.

    It won't let me open the folder  I created.  You had wanted me to name the folder C:\HJT or C:\HijackThis, but I could not put in characters, only letters.  So I saved it as C Hijack This.

    Let me know what to do now.  I am so grateful to have your help.

    DeAna

    Hi DeAna...

    You misunderstood me...

    " C:\" is your hard drive.  I wanted you to create a folder under the C:\ Drive and call it HJT or HijackThis. Please delete the folder and the HijackThis.exe file.

    Please download "hijackthis_sfx.exe" from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe to your Desktop This is a self extracting zip file.  After downloading the file all you have to do is d ouble-click on it and click on the UnZip button to install the program. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ folder by default.

    After installing the file navigate to " C:\Program Files\HijackThis" folder and run hijackthis.exe and post back a new fresh HJT log.

    Hope this helps,

    Kent

    Kent-

    Sorry about that.  I know enough about computers to barely get by!  My bad.....

    I think I did it right this time - hopefully I did.  Please, please be patient with me!  I want your help so badly!  Let me know if there is anything I need to correct and I will enlist some help getting you the info you need.

    Thank you so much!

    DeAna

    Hi DeAna...

    No problem...I'm with you...We are close but just not quite there.

    You are running HijackThis from your Desktop...C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exe. We need to get HijackThis to it's own folder as HJT makes backups when we ask you to use it to "FIX" something.  That is why I requested that HijackThis have it's own folder.  Using the instructions from my first post above (Steps 1 through 7) create the HJT or HijackThis folder then copy or move the HijackThis file from your Desktop to the newly created folder.

    Or

    Use the instructions from my last post.  The "hijackthis_sfx.exe" file I asked you to download will automatically create the folder C:\Program Files\HijackThis and install a copy of HijackThis into that folder.

    Thanks,

    Kent

    Kent-

    Thanks!!  Here I go again.  I have enlisted help so hopefully it is right THIS TIME!

    We now have a folder on the C: drive labeled Hijack This with the Hijack This with the new version in that folder.  It never prompted us to unzip this file.  Previous instructions that we used prompted for an unzip that was said to be complete, but never actually unzipped anything.

    Again, thank you for your help and patience.

    DeAna

    Hi DeAna...

    Sorry to take so long...was sick Wednesday and was quite busy at work today.  Anyways, let's get to it...

    Please print out or copy these instructions\tutorials to Notepad as the internet will be unavailble to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

    Step 1
    ==========
    - Download and install CleanUp! from http://downloads.stevengould.org/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe
    - A tutorial can be found at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial93.html
    (Note: Do not run this program yet)

    Step 2.
    ==========
    We need to uninstall some programs using "Add or Remove Program" in the Control Panel:
    - Get into Control Panel
    - Double-click "Add or Remove Programs"
    - Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below
    - If it is listed there click on it to select it
    - Click Change (or Change/Remove) button
    - If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes

    DealHelper
    Instant Access

    Step 3.
    ==========
    We need to stop some "Processes" using Windows Task Manager
    - Press the "Control-Alt-Del" keys at the same time to enter the Task Manager.
    - Click on the Processes tab
    - Using the "End Process"button end the following processes (If present)
    kaqstl.exe
    Nbqvup.exe
    AutoUpdate.exe
    atrtil.exe
    recompos.exe
    CxtPls.exe
    Exit the Task Manager when finished

    Step 4.
    ==========
    - Close all Windows and programs
    - Run HijackThis

    - Click the "Fix checked" button.

    Step 5.
    ==========
    - Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode":

    1. Restart your computer.

    2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.

    3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.

    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

    Step 6.
    ==========
    - We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:

    • Open "My Computer".
    • Click on "Tools" and from the drop down menu select "Folder Options".
    • Select the "View" tab.
    • Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known types option".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option".
    • Click "Yes" to confirm.
    • Click "OK".

    Step 7.
    ==========
    Find the following file(s) and folder(s) in Bold and delete them  (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)
    C:\Program Files\CxtPls <<<= This Folder
    C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate <<<= This Folder

    C:\WINNT\cfgmgr51.dll <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\System32\rsyncmon.dll <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\jmbm.dll <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\System32\nsgA7.dll <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\System32\kaqstl.exe <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\System32\psoft1.exe <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\System32\Uvhksl.exe <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\System32\Nbqvup.exe <<<= This File
    C:\WINNT\System32\netsync.exe <<<= This File

    You will have to "Search" for the 3 files listed below.  They are more than likely in the C:\WINNT or C:\WINNT\System32 folder...
    (Note: Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.)

    atrtil.exe
    recompos.exe
    EGDACCESS_1058.dll

    Step 8.

    Kent-

    I am sorry you were not feeling well!  You got back to me quickly and I really appreciate it.  I have printed your instructions but will wait until my husband or brother can help me.  Again, my computer knowledge is small and I don't want to make my computer explode.  I will send a new "Hijack this" log once I have completed your instructions.

    Thank you again for your help!
