As I glance at your log, I see that your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6 allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.

Thanks! I googled the filename and I see that others have the same issue with AVG.

 

I restored the file, but was unable to upload the file to those two sites that you mentioned. I kept getting virus alerts from AVG. I then deactivated AVG. I stopped getting the virus alerts, but could still not upload the file. So just to be on the safe side I ran AVG again, which deleted it. I imagine I can still restore the file from the vault if need be.

 

Perhaps there is some other way I can check out this file? Also I am going to ask AVG about this issue.

 

If so many people are getting the FP, AVG will fix it in the next update. Restore the file to its original location. Try updating AVG and see if it still finds that one.

I'm not sure why you could not upload the file once you disabled AVG. What error message did you get?

Keep the file. It sounds as if AVG has updated, fixed the FP, so it is now negative.

If only CAT-QuickHeal is reporting Trojan.DNSChanger.ewf that may be a FP as well.

If you have a DNS changer, you would probably be seeing browser redirects. We can verify that by running a tool that searches for those. Most are installed as rootkits, so if you have one, chances are, this will find it.

First, restore the file.

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.

Once the desktop loads a textfile will open (report.txt).

Well, this is getting to be kind of interesting. I restored the file, updated AVG, and ran a scan of the file -- negative.

 

Then I used another browser to upload the file to Virus Total, and it came in negative for all the many virus testers with one exception:

So, to be on the safe side I guess I had better delete this file until this issue is resolved. What do you think? Thanks again for all your help with this.

Not really. We see False Positives all the time. Some file may have a characteristic that malware also uses, so sensitive scanners will jump on it if they don't know the difference. Better to grab it than ignore it, but always good to quarantine than delete it right away.

You can delete Fix Wareout and its report.

Go ahead and update Java per instructions I posted earlier. With your old Java you are a magnet for malware.

Let's do a follow-up with MBAM. Even if it does not find anything, MBAM is a good program to keep and use regularly.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
• Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
• Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

• Then click Finish.
• MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
• If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
• On the Scanner tab:
• Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
• Then click on the Scan button.
• The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
• The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
• When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
• Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
• Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. :(see Note below)
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
• Please include a fresh HijackThis log as well.
