Hackers seem to have taken another approach to causing trouble.
Got email today supposedly from eFAX saying I have e-fax waiting. The source of the fax is supposed to be phone number 437-563-8667 and is probably spoofed. Area code 437 is in Toronto, Canada and I don't know anybody there so I'm sure this is fake.
Don't click the link if you get something like this! :emotion-5:
Well, I'm in Toronto, and certainly didn't send that email!
Area code 437 was only recently implemented, which makes that number all the more suspect.
Sorry, let me amend my OP. I don't know anybody in Toronto who has my personal email address. I have business contacts there, but they -hopefully- only have my office contact info. :emotion-2:
I have occasionally used eFax so that email got my attention until I saw the caller ID number listed as the source of the fax. A quick google turned up nothing and that's even more suspicious than anything. :emotion-5:
These spoofers have a way to send you emails and the email somehow finds a contact in your address book and uses their name(but NOT their email address) so it looks like your friend sent you the email. Those emails contain the links to viruses.
somehow finds a contact in your address book and uses their name
Except there's no name in the supposed eFax so they didn't find anything in my address book and the phone number is probably spoofed since Google doesn't find anything for that number. I'm sure it's just malware in disguise so I deleted the email.
