Secunia Software Inspector

Although it's been mentioned in passing a few times on other boards, I haven't seen this scanner discussed here before.

Secunia Software Inspector is a free online scanner that :
 * Detects insecure versions of applications installed
 * Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
 * Assists you in updating your system and applications
 * Runs through your browser, using a java applet. No installation or download is required.

Minimum Requirements:
 * Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows 2003
 * Sun Java JRE 1.5.0_06
 * Internet Explorer 6.x, Opera 9.x, or Firefox 1.5.x
 * Latest version of Microsoft Windows Update

The list of applications scanned (OS's, browsers, players, email, instant messengers, etc) is lengthy: http://secunia.com/software_inspector_applications/

The scan is quick- it took less time than a manual scan for updates at the MS Update site. It's almost "one-stop shopping" to ensure you are up-to-date with many common applications. It found 4 apps that I needed to update, and provided links.

Secunia isn't trying to sell you anything (there is no paid version, and no ads). Well worth checking out.

    I don't know that I ever tried it before, but I like what I see so far.   It found two older versions of programs I was running (potential security risks) that needed to be updated... and it also alerted me to SEVERAL old/obsolete versions of FlashPlayer that were still "lurking" on my system IN ADDITION TO the current version.

    I am using their Security Manager in conjunction with MS WSUS for my delinquent Windows domain. Good stuff ... Security Manager, not MS Windows domain. ;)
