being a relative newbie i come to this site pretty regulary for tips/info. i've had/seen some excellent stuff and as a result found new (to me) websites(castlecops , majorgeeks etc) that are really usefull and downloaded some recommended free programs,MBAM,SASpyware and most recently the new version of piriforms cclean. i used the cleaner function and was pleased with the results. out of curiosity (never intending to actually do anything) i scanned for issues in the registery. i noticed in the obselete software list an entry for lameme. a google search later and i found myself on wilderssecurity.com, a name i recognised  recently from using this forum (trendmicro, sas and fp's)and threads from 2002 relating to lameme. one post had a url to another post (supposedly on the same website/forum) promising more info.
clicking on this url brought up a response from mcafee saying "exploit-spoofURL.gen(trojan)" had been blocked and ie closed.
this isn't a request for help. just a thankyou to the forum for helping me understand what was going on and causing me not to panic as previous posts show i have done before. i had lost confidence in my mcafee, believing it had been corrupted(just an update that i didnt fully understand) but that confidence was partly restored due to the findings (or should that be lack of!) by mbam, sas and the info i have gleaned from here. the blocking has fully restored my confidence.
i guess im just trying to point out to others , follow the advice given out (bugbatter ky331 joe53 bamajim and others!) go for additional cover (belt AND braces,so to speak) if only to boost your confidence. you can never be to careful.

I just wanted to echo your compliments. I have been on the forums for awhile now and have learned so much from the regulars on this and other forums. The best thing about all this good advice is that it is FREE!  :smileyvery-happy:

I'm in the same boat as you three.  I have learned valuable information and plan on sharing it with others when possible.  I think I can speak for others when I say thank you.

i now just have to convince a member of my family who has never had av software and says they have never had a virus but has had new hard drives, motherboards etc and managed to download a dialer after visiting a questionable site. the only protection being windows firewall.
