you're using an old version, v1. 98.2 , of HJT.  please upgrade to the latest version, 1. 99.1, from

    ***************

Download [but do *NOT* yet run] FixVundo from

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixVundo.exe

[we'll have you run it later]

Note: If you have previously download this file on another occasion, please download it again, to be absolutely sure you have the most current version.

    ********************

    Next, download VirtumundoBeGone from:

    http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/VirtumundoBeGone.exe

    * Save it to your Desktop
    * Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser)
    * Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe on the desktop
    * Follow the directions as indicated

please be advised that this program will generate a "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH"... this is an expected/necessary part of the process, so don't be surprised when it happens.

just reboot if your system "jams"

    *********************

After rebooting, it's now time to run FixVundo (which you had downloaded earlier).

Make sure all other programs, including your Internet Browser, are closed.

Double-click the FixVundo.exe file to start the removal tool.

Click Start to begin the process, and then allow this tool to run.

Important: Do not launch any new applications while the tool is running!

    Reboot your computer.

Run the FixVundo removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.

    *********************

It's now time to report back to us:

VirtumundoBeGone generated a "log" file of its own, which it should have placed on your Desktop... please REPLY to this thread, and copy/paste the VirtumundoBeGone log back here, along with your latest HJT log (and be sure it's version 1.99.1).

Looks like VirtumundoBeGone successfully deactivated the two bad WinFixer/Vundo files... have you noticed any difference, in terms of WinFixer popups, and overall system speed/performance?

    *****************

I see you upgraded to HJT 1.99.1 (and you should easily see how much more information it gives us now!).    But you should move the HJT program from your Desktop:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

into a separate folder of its own... We recommend using folder C:\HJT , so that it will then appear in your log under running processes as C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe

[if you prefer, it's okay to have an HJT folder on your desktop, move the hjt program into that folder, and run the program from there.]

This is important because HJT generates log files, and backup files, in the folder from which it is run. So at present, all these logs/backups will just "clutter-up" your Desktop. And if you simply delete them from there, you'll lose the important backup information, which may be needed in case you have to "undo" [restore] some of the things you "FIX" incorrectly.

    ************

Next, i'm gonna help you with some minor touch-ups, concerning non-existent files:

    close your internet browser(s).

Run HiJackThis. Place a check-mark in the box in front of each of the lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Click on FIX CHECKED. Close HiJackThis. Reboot.

    ************************

    Next, download CWShredder from

     http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/online-tools/cwshredder.exe

open CWShredder, click on FIX.  when it's done, REBOOT.

then re-run CWShredder, but this time, click on SCAN ONLY, and hopefully it won't find anything.

    ***********************

At this point, you should generate/post an updated/revised HJT log, REPLYing to this thread.

After you reply with your log, I'm gonna try to ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might still have. Please be advised that we're very "understaffed" at the moment, so I can't make any guarantee as to when (or even if) the next helper will arrive.

    Good luck.

Thanks for all your help so far.  I did notice a difference, however the next time I logged on it was back.  Hopefully after these steps it will be gone.  Here is my latest log.

you wrote, "the next time I logged on it was back"... are we talking specifically about WinFixer?   or some other popup?   at present, i'm "specializing in" (and focusing on) your WinFixer problem --- no more, no less --- which is why i'm gonna try to call-in someone else to analyze the remainder of your log.

[you definitely still have other problems... for example, three "browser helper objects" that were installed by delf trojan downloaders... and one of which may be a "first-cousin" of WinFixer]

Be advised that we're very "understaffed" at the moment, so I can't make any guarantee as to when  the next helper will arrive.... so please try to be patient.

    Good luck.

I think this st3.dll is a new variation of winfixer.  Probably dropped the MSEvents to keep from being detected so easily.  Suspect we will need to run atribune's fix on it.

    Follow Atribune's procedure at:

    http://www.atribune.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=447&hl=killvundo

The paths the program asks you for would be:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll

    and

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\3ts.*

(IF it doesn't like the second path then use the first path again)

Please do not use the ones given in the article since they will not work for your infection.
You will know that it worked if the lines
    O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll - {1B68470C-2DEF-493B-8A4A-8E2D81BE4EA5} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: st3 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll
Either drop out of the scan or say File Missing.

    Download the Hoster from:
Unpack to your desktop and run it.  If you have green print at the top then just press Restore Original Hosts then OK.
IF you have red print then press make Hosts Writeable first.

    Get DelDomain.inf from:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf  and then right click on it and Install.

Download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
    it clean anything yet.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
    maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check  then Fix Checked the following:
    O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll - {1B68470C-2DEF-493B-8A4A-8E2D81BE4EA5} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\st3.dll

Run ccleaner.exe, uncheck everything on the first page except the two entries
with Temporary and the one about the recycle bin and then Run Cleaner.

    Reboot into regular mode

Run another HijackThis log and post it as a reply. Let's
    see how we did.

Yes it was Winfixer; but as of right now it was only that once and it's gone for now.

Yes this is a Gateway system.

The computer's running great so far.  No pop ups at all.  It was a little slow after I followed the last procedure, but it is fine now.  It also seemed to free up over 75 gigs worth of hard drive space?  Is that normal?

Thanks for all the help so far!

    Log looks much better.

There is one entry that did not go away but further research shows that this may be a valid process on a Gateway PC.  Is that what you have?

How is it running now?  Any popups, slowness?
