capacity, performance and scalability. Look at specs for each platform and you will see the difference just in terms of hardware scalability. All the extra engines in VMAX bring a lot of performance with them (DAs, FAs, Cache, CPUs)

VNX is A/P and VMAX is A/A storage controller architecture

Active/Passive, Active/Passive. Generally speaking. in VNX, only one SP owns LUN and proceed I/O operation. VMAX does it parallel through different directors.

To me the difference is almost all software, with the hardware difference being the ability to scale beyond one director pair (engines in VMAX).

Both use Intel CPUs and memory, etc.

Technically speaking,

1. VNX being a unified storage array can be used for block as well as file storage provisioning (CIFS, NFS, etc.) VMAX is block only.

2. VNX is active/passive on block side and VMAX is active/active.

3. VNX is limited to 2 storage processors on block side, VMAX can span out to 8 engines.

4. VNX is typically designed for msec response times (5-20msec) , and VMAX for sub msec response times (<5msec).

5. Biggest VNX (7500) has just about the same amount of processing power as the smallest VMAX (10K).

Many of above is changing with the new VNX arrays, contact your local EMC TC for new features and comparison between two arrays.
