black screen with message

When my granddaughter turns on her computer, the screen is black with this message: error loading operating system. The first 3 lights in the back of the tower are green and the last is yellow. All cables were secure. She uses a Dell Dimension 4400. What should she do? Thanks

    What is the exact message that is coming up on the screen? What changed right before this started?

    The Dimension 4400 Service Manual describes that LED pattern as follows:

    Definition: Other failure.
    Corrective Action: See "Contacting Dell" in the Owner's Manual for instructions on obtaining technical assistance.

    Doesn't sound good! :smileysad:

    The error message was: error loading operating system.  Prior to that the headset was hooked up for an ICQ chat. That worked ok, but when she tried to get on the computer later the problem started.

    Thanks Jim, you're right, it was my own manual that I looked at. I forgot that my computer was newer.
