Windows 8 will not install on the Inspiron 17R SE 7720.
Yet it is listed as being supported here:

I have gone through the step for a clean installation here:

Then when it comes to point 7, it only lists one hard drive. Shouldn't there be 2 listed? Anyway the hard drive that is listed is named as 'Drive 0 Partition 1' with a total size of 931.5GB. Then when I delete the partition and select the unallocated space it says
"We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the setup log files.'
My only option then is to quit setup, and I don't even know where the log files are found.

How can I get Windows 8 installed on this?

The hard drive I am referring to as missing is the second 1.0TB hard drive. I thought it would list two in the setup. I have the top of the range 17R Special Edition Laptop with 2 1 tb hard drives and 3D capability.
Anyway I tried install again by removing the second hard drive and the message I got then was 'We couldn't find any drives'. That was a puzzle as I still had the C drive in my computer and Windows 7 was running from it.
So I have now placed the second hard drive back in again.
I haven't formatted the OS partition yet as it wouldn't let me. saying it couldn't find any.
You mention AHCI. Will I be able to install windows 8 from boot if I change the bios setting from Intel Smart Response Technology to AHCI? Then once Windows 8 is installed switch it back to Intel Smart Response Technology?
Actually, its all good now. I just disabled the acceleration as you suggested first and it seems to in installing now with no problems. I thought that was only within windows and didnt matter if you tried installing from boot. Thanks so much, though. Very easy tip! You should have it up on the dell site somewhere as I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Hmm.. now that I've installed Windows 8, I can't seem to install the Intel Rapid Start Technology driver here:

After running the download it says 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.'
How can I enable that again?
Also, the second hard drive I have isn't visible within Windows anymore. Yet it is listed in the bios. How can that be fixed?
Ok, finally got my second hard drive back by using disk management and was able to enable intel rapid start again by following this en.community.dell.com/.../dell-whitepaper-intel-responsiveness-technologies-setup-guide.aspx
Problem is now when I go into Intel Rapid Storage technology and enable that it stops the intel rapid start from working as it overwrites the data that was created for that on the msata. How can I have both like I did in windows 7?
Where do I have to enable the IRST? In BIOS?
So the tutorial posted above is correct? I'm a bit scared because I read a lot about blue screens when disabling ISRT (http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?docid=575109#Intel-Rapid-Start, at the bottom of the page)

Duy, I always left irst enabled in the bios. I never switched to ahci or ide.
I can only say what I did. First it was this step from within windows 7:
• Launch Intel RST User Interface from system tray.
• Select “Accelerate” Tab, click “Disable acceleration”.
• Click “Reset to available” to reset volume.
Then I was able to do a clean install by booting to the windows 8 dvd, and deleted all partitions.
Once windows 8 is installed, you need to install the intel rapid storage technology driver, and then enable the acceleration. It's in this guide: en.community.dell.com/.../Intel-Responsiveness-technologies-0.91.pdf
It tells you about how to enable the intel rapid storage tecnnology first and then how to do intel rapid start after. For a while I was skipping over the intel rapid storage instructions, thinking it didn't apply to me, and I only had to do the rapid start setup, and then I could enable acceleration afterwards but it doesn't work like that. The acceleration with the rapid storage needs to be enabled before the rapid start is setup.

this worked for me. When you want to install windows 8, you have to leave the bios sata mode in INTEL SMART RESPONSE TECHNOLOGY. Then boot off windows 8 cd or thumb drive. the problem now is that you cannot see the hard drives but follow these directions then it will work.Lets try this. Our goal is to de- accelerate the SSD and the HDD which could be causing the no boot. So our primary target is to get to the CMD whether its windows 7 or windows 8 . For windows 8, initiate a boot failure so we can enter the advanced boot options or if boot is good, enter the elevated CMD inside the OS.. Boot from windows 8 cd or thumbdrive and instead of choosing install, choose repair and get to a command prompt through advanced options
· Type > Diskpart
· Type > List Disk
· Type > select Disk 0
· Type > Clean
· Type > List Disk
· Type > select Disk 1
· Type > Clean
· Type > Exit
· Click Restart
then boot off of your windows 8 cd or thumbdrive and now you will see both drivers, then install windows 8 on your sata disk, after install go to dell website and install Rapid Storage Technology driver and then reboot and run the RST and enable hardware acceleration. Works like a charm!!!!

Hi,
The Inspiron 7720/17R (SE) is shipped with mSATA drives with capacity of 32 GB. If you are referring to this hard drive as the one not visible in the list, that is as per the design. The mSATA hard drives are mainly used for caching purposes and to enhance the system performance. In order to re-install the Windows with an mSATA drive present in the system you will have to disable the Accelerate form iRST application.
• Launch Intel RST User Interface from system tray.
• Select “Accelerate” Tab, click “Disable acceleration”.
• Click “Reset to available” to reset volume.
If you have formatted the OS partition already, you will have to install the Windows in AHCI mode. And follow the steps mentioned below.
• Boot into OS in AHCI mode
• Once the Windows Desktop Appears
• Click Start, type Regedit
• Right click Regedit and run as administrator
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorV
Change REG DWORD Values of Start from (3) to (0)
• Close Regedit
• Restart
• F2 – Go into bios
• Change sata mode from AHCI to Intel smart Response Technology
• Save and exit
• After system reboots, download and install the iRST application and Enable the acceleration.
