I have windows xp home. I used to be able to download updates but for the last few months I have been unable to. Everytime I go to the update website explorer just hangs (a white screen). I have have run numerous spyware programs but nothing seems to fix the problem. Can anyone help me?
1. Do a thorough Disk Cleanup via System Tools - Disk Cleanup, and check all the boxes in there. Reboot, and try Windows Update. If that fails, use the Help and support link on the left side of the page at Windows Update, and follow the suggestions for resolution.
Task Sheet: Resolve Windows RPC errors caused by XP SP2 and security updates
HI HOw are you everybody:
this may be solve your problems==
Problem
Microsoft security updates, released in late February 2005, cause strange errors on some machines running Windows XP SP2. Microsoft has acknowledged this problem but not provided a fix. IT organizations should be prepared to troubleshoot these errors before Windows XP SP2 becomes mandatory on April 12, 2005.
The errors include, but are not limited to:
• Windows Update fails to function and gives the following error message:
"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page…"
• Icons are missing from the Network Connections page
• Windows Installer fails to function and gives errors when trying to install or uninstall programs
• User is unable to burn CDs
• Various programs give access denied errors
• User is unable to change the Windows Desktop or menus
• McAfee VirusScan properties cannot be modified
Solution
Until Microsoft provides a fix, use the following steps as a workaround:
1. Open the Services window of the Microsoft Management Console (Click Start | Run, Enter services.msc, and click OK or Click Start | Administrative Tools | Services)
2. Set the log on information for each of the following RPC services to Local System account instead of NT Adminstrator, see Figure A. The two services are:

• Sign up for the Windows 2000 Professional, delivered on Tuesdays
