Cant open windows update

My granddaughters computer is really a mess.  I wanted to open Windows update to see if she ever updated anything and it would just pop open and then close.  This also happens with Support and Help.  So any ideas.  Also cant open McAfee at all..McAfee just turns off.  There was some sort of pop up that came up and said somthing about regristry errors...I believe it was an add.  They also get kicked off of a lot of web sites...Hope I can Have an idea.

Sounds like you have a virus, spyware, or both. If you have an updated system you can move the drive to, you can scan using that system's antivirus. If not, back up your data, format and reinstall.

Probaby virus and spyware.  Their McAfee is borrowed and doesnt even look like they ever updated.. So, what do you mean by an updated system and move the drive?  How do I scan using the systems antivirus?  Im no pro at all...ive had my own problems and got lots of help from the forums.  So,.  if all else fails, How do we format and reinstall.  I do know how to back up info, by coping to cd, if that is good enough back up.  Any help will be appreicated.  Im also going to get them to buy their own McAfee and do auto update.  Thanks for your quit reply.

The problem is that unless you can get an updated antivirus program onto the system, and get it running in Safe Mode, you're not going to be able to scan it.

If you can get it running long enough to back up what you need to, a reformat-reinstall-patch WIndows exercise will take less time than manual virus/spyware removal.

The reinstall instructions for your model are linked from the Product Support/Reinstall Guides, top of screen.

Most ISP's provide free virus protection and firewall.  In fact, i cant think of any that don't.  Not to mention a plethora of good free programs out there.

as for getting the system fixed, you might try the microsoft system restore.  also try downloading and running adaware.  and then install a new antivirus and run it.

i did a quick check, and bell south does offer a security package for $2.99.  not bad.  it will fix the problem, so long as that is the problem.  i would also recomend installing adaware http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7423,00.asp and run it regularly.  its probably the best free program out there.  the microsoft system resore should go back about two months, depending on how much disk space is devoted to it.  as for safe mode, boot from your xp cd, and open the repair consol, the option should be there.

Thanks for everyones help.  So, they have Bell South Internet Service and probably did not take the security stuff.  If the get the Security from Bell South and download and do a scan, will this take care of their problem with shutdowns and being kicked off the internet?.  I will advise to do a system restore, I think this has been going on for about a month, so we will see. Please help.. As for Safe Mode, how do you do that?

Thanks jd, ok, I will have them get the security and see if that will fix it. thanks. I will also have them download adaware.  When should I do system restore?  before the security and download of adaware or after.  Do I have to use safe mode?.  Im not sure how to boot from a cd, which one whould I use?

So I guess I need my hand held thru this whole process.  Step by step.  thanks.

Download, install, update, and run the antivirus first.  if it is a virus problem, it's important you remove it first.  Then, I'd run adaware to remove any spyware, adware ect.  if the computer has never been cleaned of that stuff before, expect to find a couple hundred items.  And finally, run Microsoft system restore (start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore).
what system restore basically is, is an automatic backup of various system files like your registry that ; if corrupted, can cause windows to not work properly.  Just make sure you pick a date before these problems occurred.

Thanks again, I will do as you say.  When I was at their home, some message came up with 591 errors, so it is evident that they did nothing.  I'll make sure and have a pow wow with the kids.  I also check bell south and they have the whole suite for 6.99, that will take care of everything, I hope.  Hopefully, I wont have to try to understand the type of security that bell south has, I use McAfee and have had some difficulty understand the simpliest thing. My old computer was still using DOS and hard to understand, guess I have to think not so deep.  Anyways, thanks for all your help and I'll let you know how it goes.  I really do appreciate the help.  I used this forum before and had good luck.  Kept on getting blue screen and just could nt figure it out.  It was my power surger protector, no good, got a new one and no blue screens, just a kick off from web sites sometime, which I guess happenss to the best.
