Tried that. Got Blue screen. With config file corrupt, dont think it will get as far as offering useful choices. Really need to find out why my cd is not bootable. Recovery console should be available to all xp users surely?
Have you tried booting from "last known good configuration" option?
Press F8 at boot up (may have to press several times) and before Windows starts. You should get some DOS menu options and one should be the last known good configuration.

Tried both cd/dvd drives. No joy. Did Dell ever deliver non-bootable recovery disks? How can I tell if the CD contains a boot partition or if the fault is still somehow mine?
