Chart Software

I am new to making charts and I have been using the Corel Quattro Pro software since that is the only program I have. I created a bar chart with the software and I have been trying to put a month and year INSIDE each of the vertical bars but to no avail. Can this be done with this sofware? Also When I tried putting the data in the X axis UNDER each of the vertical bars, the data (e.g. month and year as -> 12/07) overlaps and is unreadable. There should be a command to permit you to arrange the data vertically and adjust the font size so this does not occur. Where can I get some sofware that permits some basic chart making, nothing exotic, but better than I have currently. Is there freeware out there? Thanks.

If you have Microsoft Office, Excel does a fairly good job of creating charts from its spreadsheets.
