check disk does not run

Hi All,

I recently had to reformat my hard drive and now check disk will not run. I get this message when ever I start the computer or restart it:

   Checking file system on C:
Type of file system is NTFS
Cannot open volume for direct access
Windows has finished checking the disk.

Then windows continues to open up this only happens on the c drive

Any help you or suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ron

from where are you running check disk, within windows, on schedule or from the xp boot disk.

I would suggest running from the xp install disk from repair console with the command chkdsk -r

I had the same problem, which is now resolved since I upgraded to SP2.  It is a know issue that was resolved in SP2.  One other issue, are you using an HP printer or scanner.  I noticed that prior to the install of SP2, when I disconnected my HP devices, the problem also went away.  Hope this helps.

boot the comp from the xp cd, XP will run through the setup procedure at which point it will detect the previous installation. It will ask if you wish to repair the existing installation using the Repair console. select the repair console, select the correct partition then at the prompt run the chkdsk -r command.
