computer restarts on startup

yesterday my computer (dimension 4300)  said my internet connection was lost, so i shut down my pc and turned it back on to see if that would help. it came to the screen where it says do u want to start it in safe mode, or normal etc. i have tried every single one and all it does is just loop back around and ask me again. It starts to show me the windows loading bar and then shows me the dell loading bar and asks me again if i want to use safe mode.

Try unplugging your modem.  Shut down your computer.  Unplug it from the wall for a few minutes.  Then plug it in and start it up without the modem.

    Hope this helps,

If nothing works, you may have to do a repair install as depicted here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

Even if the problem is your modem driver, you can't get into the graphic interface to fix it.  This is not a repair from the recovery console but a new installation over the old.  Since you may lose some data, read carefully.

If you are aware of this already, please forgive my detailed explanation.

Perhaps someone else can come along with a better solution.

    Good luck,

    Jane

Well, you wont know that until you get back to your desktop and run a virus and spyware scans.  And if it is you can back up important files and do a clean reinstall.  So try the repair reinstall (called a dirty reinstall).   If you have any questions, please post back.

Before you try the Repair Reinstall, take a look at this.  You might be able to get into Safe Mode by using Command Prompt.

    Good luck,
