Copy/Backup to CD

I regularly backup my documents in MS Office and my emails (Turnpike) to CD by dragging in Explorer. This works well.

Yesterday when I backed up I could copy my Office documents ok but when I dragged my Turnpike directory the copy just carries on indefinitely (I've left it for 3 hours). The back up seems to have worked, but the m/c seems to be trying to carry on copy. If I cancel the copy the files all seem to be copied across (checked by looking at the names of all the files and their size), but obviously I don't trust this.

I have to switich off the m/c and restart at this point as the m/c still thinks it is doing a copy even once I've cancelled.

I've now tested this several times. I always have the same problem no matter how many times I reboot or change CDs. Office documents always copy across ok and the program ends normally.

This seems very odd as I assume when copying the m/c desn't care what the contents of the things being copied are. If I copy to the desktop that works ok.

The only thing I can think I've done since the last backup is to update XP. I'm currently on the latest version.

Any help please would be appreciated as back up is critical to me.

Thank you.

Be sure turnpike or anything related to the program is NOT running at the time of copy. If the files are in use this may be the problem. Some programs have functions run at system start up, so rebooting will not stop this if it is running. Hope this helps.

Another solution is to use a 3rd party burning software (I like NERO) This will also speed up the copying and burning process over the windows Sloooow burning function..

    Thank you mombodog.

Turnpike should not be running. Also I've not had the problem before and I can copy to the desktop, so that would reinforce the fact that it isn't running and therefore causing the problem, so the problem seems to be copying to the CD. However I can copy other things to the CD and used to be able to copy this ok to the CD.

The only thing that has changed I believe is updating XP.

Interested to know more about 3rd party copying solutions. Although worried they might have same problem.

Could the size of the file be an issue? The file that the copy seems to get stuck on (I say seems because it seems to work) is the email file which is over 200mb. No other file is anywhere near that big. having said that it hasn't been a problem in the past with a bigger Mail file.

    Thanks.

Size should not matter as long as it is not bigger than the cd capacity, I have burned much larger files than 200mb with no problems, but I use Nero. There is a selective update from microsoft  that upgrades the microsoft burning software, read below. Worth a try.
