Dell Dimension 4100

Here's the situation. My friend's father installed some ad-aware program to help get rid of her 4100's spyware/adware that was running ME. Afterwards, her computer would not start up. The computer gets past the "Windows ME" screen and into the password screen.

Normally I'd be able to hit cancel and not enter a password, and the computer would run fine.

However, the computer stops running after hitting cancel. Any ideas anyone? I was thinking of installing windows again.. I tried installing drivers from DOS, but they need to be installed from windows.

Have you tried to boot into safe mode? That is one option I always forget. Also if you know the name of the "some ad-aware" what deleting it from DOS?

How do you get into safe-mode for this model?

    Safe-mode doesn't work either...
    Here's my plan...

I'm going take my harddrive and set it to be the primary HD for her computer, and use her HD as a slave. Then I'll backup any files that need to be backed up and maybe upgrade her windows to XP, are there any flaws with this plan?

I would try a registry restore in DOS first.
