dell inspiron
i have a dell inspiron 6000, i have an error message that says" windowssystem32configsystem is corrupt and i could attempt to repair by installing the original cd, i did, but it is no recognizing the cd is in there. can anyone please help me??

thank you so much dunedin, i will try this. you are terrific!!- Wait and see if you fix it first :smileyhappy:Do you know how to access the Recovery Console?When setup starts it will copy lots of files as if you were reinstalling XP. Don`t panic :smileyhappy:Then you will come to a page with an "R" option. This is the Recovery Console. Select this "R"When asked which installation to fix, just type 1When asked for a password just press EnterThen you will reach the command prompt to follow the instructions on that site

hey thanks, but you know what, what you told me the first time worked. i am using my laptop to send you this message. i changed the boot sequence, loaded the cd, then reinstalled windows xp, then had to go back in and change the boot selection back, it worked, you have been such a great help to me. saved me lots of money and stress. i am most appreciative.amethist_420

Hey Dunedin,I am having this problem now...i am missing the System file...man o man am i running into problems with this computer...i read the link but where it says if thus file doesnt exist skip to step 3....what is step 3????- Step 3 is just the next commandAre you now getting this error message nowthe following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMYou are getting too many different error messages. I suggest you run the full Dell Diagnostics just to check the state of everything before you go any further. Check the hard drive and RAM in particular.To access them press F12 when you see the dell logo screen, then there will be an option that says IDE or Hard Drive Diagnostics. That will run a quick test, if you want a more thorough test select the option that says Boot to Utility Partition, then select custom test, select hard drive and then run test.

Hi,
I'm having the exact same problem. I've followed all the steps but when I try to copy the files I'm told 'The file could not be copied' I followed the instructions to change the command to software instead of system but still came across the same error.
Also earlier it came up with 'An error occurred during directory enumeration'.
Anyone got any ideas on what I can do?

So I'm having the same problem but worst. So when this problem first occured, I went to the microsoft page, I put in the dell windows cd, went to the recovery console and when I typed the first line in it said "path/file specified not found" or something like that. Then I turned off my comp and turned it back on but this time it won't even recognize the CD. I went into BIOS, btw I have BIOS vs.A01, when to boot sequence and there were only 2,
1) CD-ROM Device (not installed)
2) Hard Disk drive-C:
They both have checks by them and that's the order it boots in. So I restarted my comp AGAIN, this is what my comp does now.
1) Does the primary boot, it doesn't look like that but that's basically what it looks like
2) Then goes to a page where it gives a few details about the computer and then says "Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility". I press F1.
3) Finally it says "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"
I press r, it goes back to the primary boot and does this whole cycle again. First of all my problem is it won't even recognize the CD, and even if it does, I run into problem trying to repair it. PLEASE HELP
hi....been having the same problem & as I am not a techie at all, I've tried my best to follow the help. I have changed the BIOS and followed Kelly-korner steps upuntil where 1 file has been copied. It now refers me to Q307654 HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP but when I go to this, MS are asking me to do the following steps:
- Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive. In the case of 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type d:\amd64\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
- A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears. The Windows Setup Dialog Box describes the Recovery Console option. To confirm the installation, click Yes.
- Restart the computer. The next time that you start your computer, "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" appears on the startup menu.
but I can't get to the start so I ran the d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons in c:\windows and the comand is not recognised.
Where do i go from there. Plz help as I'm struggling and I need to get this fixed so my son can get on with his homework.
