I have the exact same problem.  I spoke with DELL and they said to create another XP install disk and add the Raid drivers for the E5500.  Then when installing XP hit the F(?) key to install the raid drivers.

I hope to try this today.

The "F-key" you're looking for is "F6". The support drivers for the E5500 has a single package for the "Intel SATA driver". When performing the "F6" additional storage option, you are actually presented with 4 selections:

• Intel(R) ICH7R/DH SATA RAID Controller
• Intel(R) ICH7MDH SATA RAID Controller
• Intel(R) ICH8R/ICH10R SATA RAID Controller
• Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E STAT RAID Controller

In my case, the last option is pre-selected in the UI, but selecting it (or any of the others) still results in the STOP: 0x0000007B error.

We're missing something here...

More details, and the (possible) final solution:

XP may be "picky" about the SATA drivers from Intel. It may be necessary to switch the SATA mode from AHCI to ATA in the BIOS before you can successfully load XP. Once loaded, use the standard procedure to update the laptop's drivers--including the SATA drivers and chipset drivers from Intel--followed by resetting the BIOS back to AHCI. If nothing else, leaving the BIOS set to ATA prevents you from maximizing performance of the drive I/O under XP, but you will be able to install & use the OS.

I've had trouble with AHCI on Dell desktop machines before but never on a laptop.  I have the same error when AHCI is turned on in BIOS and try to load XP SP2.  That's fine, I have an OCZ Vertex SSD in mine.  That makes up for it.  :)

I did make a floppy disk with the Intel Storage driver on it and tried every single one of the drivers.  None worked and they all blue screened. 

I gave up and put it in ATA mode.  Works fine.

I just wanted to note that I was able to build a slipped stream XP Pro SP. 3 disk using nLite and integrating the driver from Dell. You have to pick the AHCI ini and select the this controller. Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller. I was able to leave the E5500 in its shipped BIOS config and install XP with no issue.

If that is a Dell OS CD you slipstreamed, I'd love to have a copy.  Could you make an ISO and upload to a torrent site like MiniNova.org?  Or maybe put on an FTP site?  I'd be happy to donate some space.

No, its was a Corp. Volume copy. But if you have the Dell CD, using nLite is very simple. You can use the CD and the drive and make the slipstreamed version.

This error may occur if the registry entries and the drivers for the mass storage controller hardware in the backup computer are not installed in Windows XP.

For integrated device electronics (IDE) controllers, there are several different chip sets available, such as Intel, VIA, and Promise. Each chip set has a different Plug-n-Play identifier (PnP-ID).

The PnP-ID information of mass storage controllers for the backup computer must be in the registry before startup so that Windows XP can initialize the correct drivers.

During the first Black Screen where windows says Detecting Additional Hardware you press F6.

After you press F6 to specify additional mass storage device drivers during the installation of Microsoft Windows XP,
you can press S, and then install those drivers from a floppy disk .

I found this thread while having the same issue with my E5500. Mine came factory loaded with XP. After having a hard drive crash I was sent another drive that was preloaded with Vista. When I went to wipe it and reinstall XP Pro I would get to the point where the setup program displays: "Setup is Starting Windows" and immediately crash with the Blue Screen and same error codes originally posted here.

I found out that there is a BIOS setting that has to be switched if you go from Vista to XP. It solved my problem so hopefully it may solve yours as well if you ever stumble on this thread.

Reboot your computer and select F12 when you see the 1st Dell screen. Select to go into BIOS Setup from your options. From within BIOS choose System Configuration--> SATA Operation and from within SATA operation select the "ATA option. Mine was defaulted to AHCI and wouldnt work. After choosing ATA, it worked like a champ. Be sure to save your settings from within BIOS.
