my new Dell inspiron 6400 arrived yesterday, with Vista installed. I installed many of my softwares incld antivirus, office etc., and even partitioned the root C drive. Before that i never ran the dell media direct.
On running it first time - while starting - it says Making dell media direct files as i'm running it for first time - and then i get a blue screen error - 0x000000F4. I tried re-installing the Media direct from the DVD provided - but while re-installing -" it says my hard drive is not ready for the installation - please boot from dvd itself."
I contacted dell, and i've told as i've partitioned my hard-disk, it may have caused media direct non-functional. Also, PC restore may also not work.
If you reformatted your whole drive, including those other smaller partitions that were there, then you lost the Media Direct and the Dell Factory Restore partitions. Not a big deal though. You may want to search the forum to see if there is a way to recreate the Dell Media partition without reinstalling everything (creating a partition and installing Media Direct there???). But if not, then reformat and do this:
-After reformatting and before loading Vista, install the Direct Media CD so it can create its own partition (a guide came with that CD...the guide tells you how to do this part)
-Reload the Vista operating system and your drivers and applications in the right order
-Follow these instructions another forum link suggested to reinstall the actual Media Direct program:

I am sure there is an easier way...search the forum a bit to see if there is. There is a Media Direct repair download but it is for XP, not sure if they have it for Vista.
You would think there would be an easier way, but apparently there is not. I have been searching for an answer to this since installing Vista in January. I may be wrong, but it seems that Dell has no plans to offer a repair utility like the one offered for Windows XP. I have also been disheartened that there is no Vista compatible Dell Support tool available for download, and the Dell PC Fix web site is not yet compatible with Vista.
Vista has been out for 6 months now. How loong must we wait?
Lol...your frustration is well understood. In regards to the Dell Support application, I saw in another thread where the next version they are working on should be Vista supported (I do not feel like searching for it again though). I would just check the drivers section periodically.
To reinstall Mediadirect, you need to first disbale the User Account Control, restart, then reinstall Mediadirect. Otherwise, it will say "Your hard drive is not ready", or whatever it says. I had this same problem when I installed Vista on my laptop.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, but I have tried the suggestion of disabling UAC. It did not work for me, and I still had to reinstall all my programs that time. As I said, I have been searching for an answer to this for months, including trying every solution offered on the boards and spending many hours with Dell support. Again, please Dell, give us a Media Direct repair utility as you did with Windows XP.
