DELL XPS400 & Internet Explorer issues

I just purchased a Dell XPS400 and have had it about 48 hours.  The first time I fired it up, I spent some quality time on the internet with IE (surfed and worked great!). The following morning I added my e-mail accounts and I noticed that I lost internet connectivity with IE.  My Outlook Express could send and receive e-mail, I could ping from the command prompt to the outside world, my MSN messenger worked but I could not connect to anything via IE! I have shut off the firewall in Windoz and also in the Norton Internet Security that was bundled with my computer. This computer is connected directly into my D-Link router. I cannot get or see anything with IE!  I first suspected Norton but I found it odd that only IE could not connect to anything on the web but my other programs seem to work just fine.  I installed Netscape's browser and I have the same results, it cannot connect to anything on the web.  It is acting as if IE is being blocked for some reason.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I have exhausted all of my troubleshooting ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you have a firewall block somewhere. Try connecting the computer directly to your DSL/Cable eliminating the D-link router. If that doesn't work, check to make sure your connection settings are correct in IE. Example, you don't want the Proxy server option checked. You might even go to each tab in IE and click "default settings". Finally, go to the General tab and clear out the temporary files and cookies. Try this and let us know if any of this helps.

Thanks! I will give those a try. I know that Norton does block my e-mail even though I have it configured not to. It appears that the POP3 can get through but the issues appear to be with my SMTP settings. When I disable Norton my e-mail works without a problem but once it starts back up, I have issues. Anyhow, I will sure let you know if your suggestions help. Going to attempt the router bypass first. Thanks for taking the time to respond! I very much appreciate it!!

When you say Norton, I'm assuming Norton Firewall? If so, it's simply a configuration issue. You need to configure whatever your email is to allow free communication to the Internet. i.e., If using Outlook, go into the Firewall rules and change Outlook to Permit communications.

I went ahead and connected directly to my DSL modem. It gave me the same scenario, I could ping from the command prompt to yahoo.com or a few others but Internet Explorer would not bring anything up. I then went into IE and as you suggested, defaulted every tab there was. I also went into the "Manage Add Ons" area and disabled any that were not needed. I then deleted all temporary files and cookies. I found the same thing, I could ping from the command prompt but still IE would not connect to anything. I have both the Windoz and Norton Firewalls disabled. The only thing that I did different from the night that it worked to the morning that it did not, was that Corel installed a "patch" and I saw two other updates that had been downloaded at the same time (can't remember what the other two were). Since the computer is new, I could not restore to the day before since that was when I first fired it up. My e-mail works coming and going and again, just the IE issue. I am open for any more suggestions and appreciate your time and help Sparky1641!!!

    Thanks!

Sounds like you still have a firewall issue. Disable Norton by going into preferences and disable from starting up at boot. Do this for any other Firewall software you have, then try again. If this still doesn't work, try starting the computer in safe mode with Networking and try again. If that works, then something in your start up programs is preventing IE from working. If this still doesn't work, we will have to do some repairs to IE. Let us know..

Well, I dove deep into the computer and did most all those with still the same results. To save a headache and future issues, I just did a PC RESTORE from day 1. I now am configuring it a little more carefully and in thinking back, it was during an update that was downloaded for Corel and 2 others. Maybe something became corrupt during that download with IE. Dunno.

Thanks for your help and suggestions! I would have liked to attempt to get to the root of the problem but if I run into it again, I will know exactly what the issue was that triggered the problem in the first place. I hate having a new machine and spending more time trying to fix a problem than enjoying it. I ruled out several obvious issues with your help and a help of a friend. Kinda like buying a car and it breaks down on the way home from the dealership.

Have a great week and thanks for your help and suggestions!!!
