I got my E521 about 5 weeks ago and have had problems ever since. When it was initially set up it worked fine. Then for some reason I get problems with subsequent restarts. The Windows startup screen runs slow and the Vista logo sound stutters. When I switch between user accounts the screen immediately goes black but then recovers. When I click on certain program tabs the screen goes black as well. I have had my system exchanged, Dell sent a new hard drive for the second system, and I have upgraded my Video card to the 256 Radeon X1300 pro. I have spent hours dealing with this problem via phone calls, emails, and experimentation. Does anyone have similar problems or have any solutions?
I updated the RAID drivers and the symptoms are, unfortunately, the same. Earlier, but after my original post, I reinstalled Windows Vista to see if the absence of all the other drivers and software that came with the system might help. The first few reboots I did not have the stuttering sound during the Windows Logo, but my screen still went black if I switched users accounts or logged off. Sometimes it doesn't go black, sometimes it does. I can't figure out why. But even with the new RAID drivers I have the same stuttering and blackouts as before. I am not sure what to do next. Could there be a problem with my monitor driver? I am using the driver that came with the system. I have a Philips 107S CRT. Any more suggestions?
I received an E521 yesterday with an X1300 Pro card and Vista basic on it. I have also been having general performance problems and had an issue where the screen would go completely blank upon booting to the login screen. Fortunately I was able to log in by blindly typing my password, and once Vista finished loading the display came back with a message along the lines of "The R300 driver stopped responding, but now it's recovered".
Updating the display driver seems to have fixed the black screen issue (I went to the ATI website and downloaded the latest driver from there - if you're running 32-bit Vista then
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vista32/common-vista32.html is a direct link). Not sure if this is the same as the issue you've been having but it's worth a shot.
I haven't solved the performance issue yet though. The 'desktop manager' task seems to use quite a bit of CPU at times, and the hard drive seems to be busy with something (I haven't investigated what yet). I don't have any previous experience with Vista to compare with, but it looks like there is plenty of room for improvement on the basic installation I was delivered. Maybe someone else has some performance tips?
I have installed the ati display driver for Vista 32-bit already. Your symptoms are like mine, as far as the performance issues are concerned. I just went to a store and noticed that all the showroom models of systems that run Vista have the same problem with the screen going black when switching users or logging off. It must be an OS problem. I just assumed that the transitions would be smooth like Windows XP. I can't figure out why I have the startup issue though. My system just seems to be working too hard. Let me know if you figure that out.
I think the problem has been solved. I reinstalled Vista without all the drivers and other software that came installed from Dell (most of which are not the newest versions anyway). The system booted up fine at first but then the symptoms returned. I decided to turn of Windows Aero and rebooted and the symptoms disappeared. I have since left the Aero feature off and installed different programs and then rebooted each time and the symptoms seem to be gone. I think Aero is just too taxing on my system, even though I feel my system is adequate. I hope this will help any others who might be experiencing like problems.
