Take a look at what is loading at startup (Start|Run, enter msconfig and click OK). You will find a comprehensive list of items that may be there and whether or not they are required by entering them in the search engine here. Ideally it would be nice to have 85% resources free, but performance should be fine with 60% or more.

You might also take a look at Device Manager to see if there are any red or yellow "bangs" there that might indicate a hardware problem.

Since you don't have Windows XP you don't have a Windows Firewall which would protect you again Internet viruses is you had Windows XP. That's not an issue with Windows 9X operating systems.

Please make sure to start your firewall (at least Windows Firewall) before connecting to the Internet.

Wow, thanks a lot. I keep AV software up to date (live update with Norton when I have it on and also with the EZ Armor...well, it's not as user friendly, but thought it would work just the same)...neither is getting the two things (scanregw.exe(worm) and systemtray.exe(trojan)) I found from that list.

I will definitely bookmark that page and keep for future reference. Hopefully the new AV sweep will get it (just DL more defs) and make everything right again. Thanks again!

UPDATE: Well, the lag is better, but not fixed; and the odd thing is I didn't really do anything special. Still no hits on the AV software or on spyware; upon further investigation, the scanreg and system tray I saw before in the startup were the right thing, signed by microsoft and all.

So now, I am still at a loss...the computer is still running at about only 40% on resources, but not as much lag as before, and but still some drastic changes in resources that I have noticed. System and user resources at 33%, and GDI at 50% at last glance.

I do still get, at random, the error that there is not enough memory to run a program and it could (or could not, very random) be the only thing running. I hit OK, and then try again and usually it's allowed to start. *sigh* Seems that after a while of running, the 'net stops loading as well (regardless of FW settings); seems the only way to rectify that is to reboot and then all is well for about 5 minutes.

Do I have enough RAM in this computer? I have considered upgrading the RAM, but have also heard that ME doesn't play well with too much RAM (or with a lot of things for that matter). I have noticed since the last post as well, that there are several programs that when I try to shut down the computer or do a reboot after modifying something, that there is often an error that whatever said program is, kernal32.dll (I think) and must be shut down...then I usually have to hit OK and on some it works and ends the program, others I have to just turn the power off completely and then turn it back on.

And here I thought that a reinstall would eliminate the 'maketheownermad' file. Any further help would be appreciated...trying to avoid taking to the local computer dr.

If you don't see them in MSCONFIG, delete the shortcuts from Startup folder (Start -> Programs -> Startup.)

Are you running more than one antivirus program and firewall? It appears that both Norton Antivirus and EZ Trust antivirus are active as are the EZ Trust firewall and ZoneAlarm. Only one of each should be active.

After you formatted and reinstalled ME did you install your system drivers (chipset drivers first) before installing any applications? If not, see this.

128MB of RAM is plenty for ME and the amount of RAM has nothing to do with resources, which are limited under ME to 64K.
