Driver Problems after XP Pro Upgrade - Inspiron 1000

I have an Inspiron 1000. I upgraded the operating system from XP Home to XP Professional. After the upgrade when I restart the computer it identifies the Touchpad and the Ethernet card as new hardware and tries to load the Alps Touchpad driver and the SIS 900-based PCI Fast ethernet adapter. Both attempts to load the drivers fail.

The mousepad works with the installed driver. I don't know whether the ethernet adapter is operational or not as I connect to a wireless network.

I went to the Dell web site to download updated drivers for the mousepad. The driver that I found is the same one that is installed on my system. I tried to reload it and got an error stating "Update driver for plug and play devices" with "Code = 0x00000005".

I then tried to uninstall the existing driver through the Device Manager and allow the system to rediscover the hardware. Uninstall did remove the Alps Touchpad from the list of installed devices, but the driver reload continues to fail and the system continues to recognize the both components as "new" hardware each time the system restarts.

I also tried all of the above in Safe Mode. Haven't tried to tackle the Ethernet card as I assume the problems are similar and the solution to one will point the way to the other.

Any ideas?

You need to install the Chip Set, Video, Audio, and NIC drivers for your system.

I found drivers for video, audio, and nic.

By "Chip Set" driver do you mean system bios?

Went ahead and tried it anyway .... Intel Chipset installation utility won't run ... says that installation utility requires a supported chipset platform running on a supported operating system.

A search of Dell's driver support area for "Chip Set: Inspiron 1000" results in only one hit. It is for a BIOS update.

    http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?cat=sup&subcat=sup/dyd&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&k=Chip%20Set:%20Inspiron%201000

Ran the BIOS update and no help. Any other ideas?

Downloaded the driver file as specified. It lists Inspiron 300, 600, 1100 and 5100. Does not specify Inspiron 1000. Is there any way I can verify the chipset in use on the 1000 to make sure it is the correct file?

    That's my error, I used Insprion 1100 instead of 1000.  I would suggest the Notebook system Software which I belive contains the Chip Set driver;

Nope, still no luck. The file you suggested explicitly lists the Inspiron 1000, but the drivers fail to load either automatically as PnP devices or manually.

Would this all go away if I reformat and re-load from scratch? If so, can I load the XP Pro Upgrade without first loading XP Home? Do you know if the upgrade CD will recognize the Dell reinstall CD as a valid copy of XP Home?

I'd really rather not do that if there is some way around these driver issues.

BTW, I did run the file you suggested in both normal mode and again in safe mode.

For the record, I called Microsoft and spend several hours on the phone with them trying a number of things to correct the problem with the upgrade. Finally, their suggestion was a clean reload. I went ahead and took that advice as I was running out of time for other solutions. It was a pain given the need to reinstall all of the helper apps that are needed on the web.

Thanks for your assistance. The problems went away with the clean install. Time to move on.
