I have dell dimension 2359 and with windows xp home edition on it.
when i try to upgrade with windows xp professional it work but when i go to the control panel --> system --> device manager - i see other devices with (?)question marks. such as USB controller, video adapters and there few more to it. what hould i do that to get these drivers installed? any help please. i think that means that i have not installed that drivers. so then i got dell drivers and utilites cd which came along with the compuers, i installed that. i can not go online. i have cable connected from modem to the ethernet port ont the back of the cpu. And one more problem i have is that when i try to shutdown my standby button is transparent. i can not select that. i cna see it but can not use it. Any help please.
After upgrading to Windows XP, the first drivers that should be installed are the chipset drivers. Until the chipset drivers are installed, Windows will not be able to recognize or install drivers for many devices. So, install the chipset drivers first, then install the drivers for your network adapter, video adapter, and sound card. Are you sure you have a Dimension 2359? I've never heard of that model. Is it really a 2350?
thanks steve will these slove my problem.
right now i can not go online. that means that i have not installed ehternet controller.
in my device manager these few stuff has (?) marke in front of them
ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, SM Bus controller, Universal Serial Bus Controller, video controller. what should i do for that. it is not there in the driver and utilities cd. any help. appreciate.
Did you install the chipset drivers? Again, the chipset drivers need to be the first drivers installed. Once the chipset drivers are installed, it will solve the problem of the SM BUS Controller and USB Controllers and you will then be allowed by Windows to install drivers for the video adapter, network adatper, sound card, modem, etc. If you don't install the chipset drivers first, then you cannot install the drivers for these other devices.
thanks steve i did like you said install chip set and other drivers. but now i have another problem.
cmos checksum error - defaults loaded
when i go into the setup i see
1st boot as floppy drive which is don't have on my computer. then i change it to hard drive and boot it again. it works great. but when i restart the my computer i get that same error again. what should i do now.
steve thanks you very much for your help. its really working for me.
appreciate.
No, clearing CMOS will not hurt the system. It clears the information on what devices are attached to the motherboard and then forces the BIOS to redetect everything.
