Are you using IE or does Earthlink provide a Browser.?

    http://www.earthlink.net/home/software/

As far as "paying for it", if Earthlink is your current ISP then you are already paying for it and the update to the newer software is FREE.
If your computer came with a free three month trial of Earthlink which has expired, then you will either have to choose another ISP or sign up for a full version Earthlink, either way you will have to pay for it.

Earthlink uses IE as it's default browser.

Can you sign on and connect to the internet at all at this point? If you can and Earthlink is your ISP already, then go to my link at the top of this message. Download the Total Access 2004 file to your desktop (or somewhere you can find it). Then uninstall (using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel) the Earthlink 5.0 you have now. When that is done, reboot, then run the file for Total Access 2004 you just downloaded, following all the prompts.

Earthlink 5.0 has been updated several times and is now Earthlink Total Access 2004. It could be that the 5.0 version is no longer supported. Go to Earthlink Support Downloads and download the latest version. You will be prompted to create a profile during installation.

now my internet won't even connect...you asked earlier if i was even able to connect to the internet.  I'm at college so we all go through the same connection, but mine isn't working now....would there be a reason for that, or does that have anything to do with this?

When you try to connect to the internet what happens? Do you get an error message? I assume you're using XP?
