I have FREE MSN Explorer 7.02 & it uses the JAVA selected by IE.
How do you know MSN 9 is using  VM JAVA when IE is using SUN JAVA.?

You can check using this site http://javatester.org/version.html  if it connects you have JAVA enabled & it shows VM or SUN version in pink box.

I use the same site to check it. I have the box checked in IE to use the Sun java. Since MSN is just a glorified IE any change to IE usually shows up in MSN. But not in this case. I had both MSN and IE windows open and used that site to check what java was being used. In IE it was Sun and for MSN it was Microsoft. This is very strange. There must be some setting in MSN that is causing this, I think.

Well since you have both JAVA's installed you could try disabling the VM JAVA completely by removing tick in IE & only leave the SUN JAVA ticked.

And check with MSN Support.

I tried that but still the same thing. I emailed both MSN and SUN today with the problem. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what their responses are. Thanks again for your suggestions.
