had to replace windows operating system 3 times so far..
ok guys, this is my problem. i bought this computer in june of 04, still under warranty. well on fathers day everything just froze up on me, when i called Dell, they said it was a virus and after trying several different ways to get rid of so said virus, they made me reinstall the windows operating system. after that it was running fine. last week again, everything froze up. i have a dimension 4600 and i can not get any help from the dell people, they say they will call back but never do. I think its the computer tower that needs to be replaced. Now i can not even get online, due to the fact that i can not install the drivers correctly. Can anyone help me and tell me what to do about getting help from the dell people or about getting a replacement tower? I have spent a total of about 30 hours on the phone with several different "tech's" only for one to screw up what the other is doing. Please help, thanks
What makes you think you need a new "tower"? It sounds like you may be getting infected repeatedly. Do you have a virus scanner? Do you scan for spyware?
Do you have a firewall in place?
Did you properly reinstall the drivers for your chipset and other devices?
Before deciding the machine is broken, you should check the basics.
yes i have a virus scan, and a scan for spyware but it will not let me run it or download it again. i also have a firewall in place. as far as the drivers, i tried to reinstall them but they wouldn't download them "properly" as you say. i have two resource cd's for the drivers and neither of them would download correctly. And I did check the "basics" several times, but still didn't do me any good.
What kind of reinstall of windows was performed ? Was it a Windows Repair ? A Reinstall over the old windows XP, that is faster ? Or did you do a complete Reformat, than a Reinstall of windows, which would have cleaned your system of any viruses.
Is there a chipset driver for this model that you were supposed to install right after loading XP? And is there a version of Dell's Desktop System Software for this model that also needs to be installed at/near the beginning? The correct driver installation order is:
chipset driver
video driver
audio driver
network driver
other drivers
And are you sure some file on removable media (floppy, CD, etc) isn't infected and re-infects your system every time you open that file?
The tech's at dell made me take out everything out of my computer and then reinstall windows so i'm taking that i did the complete reformat and then reinstalled the windows operating system.
I never heard any of the tech's say anything about a chipset driver. The driver they were trying to get me to install was a NVIDEA driver. They had me put in the cd that came with my original packaging saying "resource cd - for drivers". after trying to install from the cd, it would totally screw up my computer more, now i can't get online to try to download the updated drivers from dell. but good news from the "dell" people today, said they would send a tech out to my house to replace the hard drive, or how they said "replace the parts inside" since they SEEM to think that my hard drive is messed up. Thinking its nots a removable media, as i don't use floppy's and the only cd i have used in this computer is the windows operating system cd and tried the resource cd for reinstallation of drivers.
Within that Resource CD you will find all the basic drivers you need and they need tobe installed in a certain order:
Chip Set-Video-Audio-Network Card(s), and from there it doen't really matter. The first four do matter.
Install the OS and all those drivers plus your AntiVirus program and Spyware program before you even think about going on line and then the first place you go to is Microsoft update and get every critical one they have. Then you can begin to install your other programs and updates.

Then you need to follow jmwills instructions to install the chipset driver and the other drivers from your CD.
