I want to change the HAL driver on my Dell Dimension 2350 computer (Windows XP Professional SP1, Pentium 4 2GHz, 256Mb RAM). I am trying to run a third party application which gives me the following error message "Error: Possibly multiprocessor kernel installed". When I checked Device Manager I noticed that I have "APCI Uniprocessor" HAL which supports multiprocessor systems. Though my current system has a single processor installed on a single processor motherboard. I want to switch to "ACPI PC" HAL which applies to a single processor motherboard with a single processor.
I tried to manually force in a system HAL during an upgrade installation of Windows XP. During the text-mode phase of the setup program, when you receive the following message across the bottom of the screen "Press F6 if you have to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver", you can press F5. When I pressed F5 I was supposed to get a complete list of HAL drivers. But I got only two options: "Standard PC" and "Other".
I need to install the "ACPI PC" HAL and since it was not available from the list I chose "Other" and I got the following message "Setup could not determine the type of the computer you have. Please insert the disk labeled manufacturer supplied hardware support disk into drive A:". I have been told by the third party application technical support that I can fix this problem if I changed the HAL because their application does not support hyper threading. My question is how can I get an "ACPI PC" HAL for a Dell Dimension 2350 computer?
I am only posting here so I can follow this thread. Other than that, I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to do. I had alway assumed that whatever HAL driver/dll that was loaded was correct one for the computer it was running one. P.S what app are you tyring to load.
The Dimension 2350 apparently supports "Hyperthreading". That may be what the application's installer is complaining about. Check the 2350 system setup documentation. It should how to explain how to disable hyperthreading in the BIOS.
