i had access to a really fast connection so i downloaded sp2 onto my inspiron 700m...i got the black screen of death and had to email MS on my other computer at home
they told me to do a repair of xp: my computer came back on but it was slower than molasses and i couldnt use it..they then suggested a series of comlicated things and i asked if it would be better to just reinstall windows and my drivers and programs and they said yes so i did my compter now works, but i am unable to install an antivirus or firewall...my compter came with macafee and norton on the disk, but it wont let me install them...i have a firewall and antivirus disk here norton 2004 and it wont let me install it..i went out and bought norton 2005 but it wont let me install...when i try it says that it encountered an error and stopped but it doesnt say what error....MS is being unresonsive to my issues now and i cant use my laptop untill i can install this software..does anyone have any ideas PLEASE!!!
If you installed SP2, you don't need a third-party firewall . . the built in on in XP is good. You cannot usually install more than one antivirus . . if you installed McAfee Norton will not install and vice-versa . . depending on which one you want to install, their websites should have some support pages to help.
Is it possible you got infected over this high speed connection before you attempted to install antivirus? The fact that Windows won't let you install AV is suspicious. I've been on the receiving end of an infection within minutes of connecting to a broadband link on a machine that was supposed to have a firewall in place but didn't - won't do that again in a hurry! Install Windows XP, then SP2, then AV, then Windows firewall, then connect to the internet for AV updates. And if you're behind a NAT router, so very much the better.
When you reinstalled XP, did you delete and recreate the partition, format them proceed to install? If not, you may not have fully removed everything from the old installation. A good time to install SP2 is right after the initial installation of XP while it is clean . . then load chipset drivers . . then all others followed by installing programs.
