I bought Inspiron 9400 with Vista but for few reason I want to replace Vista with Xp and still keep my documents on HD, I try simple solution same like installing Xp, boot it from CD but when I try it with vista there was error and system automatically shut down. Any one have link to quid where they have explain how to install Xp on vista and is installing Xp effecting my Dell insurance ?
the short answer is that you would have to do a clean install of XP, which would result in a necessary wipe of your HD. back all of your files up and then do the install.
but really... vista is much better.

OS is not my problem of concern, what I was asking is if any Hard drive break, then I would contact Dell and said this and this happen, and if they find out that I install other OS that they have provided my with, would it cancel my insurance, and reason why I want to go back to Xp is that I use a lot of softwares, some of them are old, and Vista really struggle with some of them, and they still have to work on it till then I'll go to Xp, sad I can’t go back to 98 :)
Get a USB harddrive, attach to the system still with Vista installed. Get an image backup programm (Acronis disk image or the likes) safe the entire hard drive and then do th4e XP install. If there is a problem with the hardware later on, you can always backup the XP installation and replace it afterwards with the original vista installation. Like that you have a system clean after delivery from Dell.
i have latitude D830 and i had this problem .
i did this :
first:copy all the nessesary information from my hdd to dvds
second : restart and change the config of sata in the bios setup ( before this
you must the flash config in the bios setup)
third: boot from xp and partition your hdd to 3 partition and install the xp os
on the c drive.
forth: when the installing of xp ends , use your vista dvd when you are in xp os
( dot boot from vista dvd ) and install it in drive d
fivth : put your informations to drive e
note I : you need to have xp drivers for your notebook , so before all download
them from dell.
note II : if your notebook has media direct , after second step you must use
your mediadirect cd. it will format all the harddisk and have a partiontion
for itself. and after step five again use the mediadirect cd to complete
its installation.
Yes I can Move all my files to buck up Drive or in to DVD, and then If there is problem I can use back up DVD provided by Dell. I was hoping to install Xp with out reinstalling software’s I have but I think that’s impossible.
try going to program files and find the program you are trying to run, right click and choose run in compatibility mode with, and choose which ever OS you need. VISTA has so far taken everything I've thrown at it, except an HP printer.
