logging into windows problem

yesterday I restarted  my computer and when it got to the windows xp logon icon i clicked on it and two seconds late it said it was logging off!. I have tried to log on loads of times now but I am not getting anywhere!. Also i have tried to start the computer in safe mode but I still get the same problems. Is there anyway of getting into the desktop without logging on?. Or does anyone think this might be a virus??. Please help me!!!!

    Hi,
Here is how to fix that. Follow the instructions carefully.

Boot up with your XP installation CD and let setup run.
Select the first “R” you come to to enter the Recovery Console
    You should be in C:\windows
    Now follow from here:
    C:\windows
    type
    cd system32
    ENTER
    the directory should now be
    C:\windows\system32
    type
    copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
    ENTER
    1 file should be copied,
    now REBOOT!
Login might hang for a while.

Once in windows run Regedit and go to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Look in the right pane for the Userinit value/subkey. Double click the Userinit subkey and change it's value to C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,
Make sure you have the comma at the end.
    Exit Regedit.

Look for “wsaupdater.exe" on your system and delete it
I think you should find it here
    C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe

I am experiencing this same issue with my dimension 3000.  I followed the steps but am still experiencing this issue.  The only way I was able to reboot was to shut off my comupter and turn it back on.  Perhaps that is why it didn't work.

In my second attempt, after I typed "copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe", I was asked the question if I wanted to overwrite wsaupdater.exe.  My options are Yes, No, and All.

Should I be selecting Yes or All?

    Thanks.

I am having the same problem but I can not find my restore disk. I have looked on the dell website for a download for it but couldn't find it. and it seems that the only way dell wants to help you is if your computer is still under warranty. I am pretty puked with dell right now. grrrrrrrrr

    Hello all

May be able to help, if you start up or reboot your computer and press F8 or F11 one of the two you enter the BIOS then from there (i cant remember the setting off the top of my head) you can change the administrator password this may reset everything so you can log into the system.

Sorry if abit vague, hopefully it will come to me mroe later if not ill try it out when im home
