Looking for a backup utililty
I just purchased an external hard drive but it didn't come with any backup software and I dont know what is good to use for that. I did use Windows' backup utility for now but it seems like its a very generic utility and I was just curious if there is anything better out there. Something in the $50 or less range is what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

Judging a utility by problems reported in its support forum can be problematic, since satisfied customers rarely post there. I rely on recommendations from posters far more knowlegable than I, and the folks I trust recommend Acronis T.I.

I've been using the Acronis "True Image" for a while and it does what it says it does.

Before you jump into the Acronis True Image bandwagon, you might want to read many of the posts here:I was going to invest in it until I read the numerous "issues" surrounding this software. I decided to stick with my Norton Ghost 9 (by the way...Norton Ghost 9 works with Vista). Be VERY sure you want Acronis. I suggest downloading the trial v10 and installing. I did...and it did not work for me. Verified the image in Windows and with Boot disk and still found the image corrupt when I actually tried to restore with TI 10. Luckily, I also had a Ghost backup and restored from thatBTW...I am NOT impressed with Norton Ghost 10...awful compared to v9. Remember that Ghost 9 was just a repackage of Powerquest Drive Image 7...which was terrific!BobMessage Edited by Bobmitmen on 01-12-200710:30 AM

I've done complete hard disk recovery with Acronis True Image, V9 twice and neither time had a problem. I now have the new V10, but haven't had to use the restore function.

Joe and Jack, have you guys had any experience with Ghost v 9, and if so what are your opinions of it? Kevin, Bay_Wolf, said he used Ghost and I'm looking into an image utility as I'm going to install a second hdd and want an image of the old on the new. The old one, 5years old is making funny noises.Jay536

I personally prefer Acronis to Ghost but that said, both are good. I'm presently still using version 9.0 and no problems with it or any of it's predecessors going back a number of version releases.536

Jay, I haven't used Norton or even looked into it. I had so much problems with Norton security and firewall before I dumped it that I've soured on Norton products.

I have Ghost 9 installed on 3 machines, recently switched a 4th machine to Norton Save & Restore - i.e. Ghost 11. I found that NSR loads quicker, runs faster, and seems simpler, but it's only been a week.
