Hi all, I have a dell e520 and my sound card is onboard. I upgraded to Windows Vista Business today, from a Windows XP Professional. I had several problem and might have more since I didn't test everything yet. All the known issues were fixed, except for my microphone problem. I use the skype software and so the microphone is very important to me. First I uninstalled the driver and after reboot windows installed a generic driver automaticaly. The sound was still working but the microphone still wasn't. Then I installed the SygmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC Driver that I found on the dell site, and it was Vista especific I think (the file name is R147075.EXE). The sound is still fine and my microfone still not working. I went thought the forums and found nothing that could help me. I cannot reinstall the system from scratch becouse I have lot of files and I don't have an extra hard drive or partition to backup this files. Thanks for reading.
I finaly figured out what was hapenning. Windows Vista has a default imput port for microfone. It automaticaly set the default to the front of my computer and my microfone was attached to the back. What I did to change that is: (the names might be wrong here since my windows is in portuguese, but you can probabily figure out from my description) go to control panel -> sound and hardware -> sound -> click on the recording tab -> select the port you are using (back or front of your computer) -> click on properties -> there is a level tab, put the microfone to 100 (this is the volume) -> then click aply and ok -> then click on set default. As I said I translated some of the menus and tab names so it might not be right, but you can figure it out from this I hope. Just posting this becouse it might help someone
I think that the only solution you have is to reinstall the software provided from Dell from the Drivers's CD or go to dell web site and download the software from the driver R147073.EXE
Once installed the software reboot the computer and check if the microphone works, if not , go to the device manager window, click on sound, video and game controller and unistall the sygmatel coded drivers.
Remeber to unistall ONLY the drivers and not the all software. When appears the new windows asking the confirmation of your choise , check that the box that requires also the unistallation of the software is unmarked. once done reboot the PC.
unfortunately this will be not the only time you will do this.
Repeat the operation any time that the microphone is not recognized untill Microsoft or Dell will find better solutions.
Plug the microphone and Vista should recognize it immediately asking you few options that you will decide.
This is the only solution you have for this issue.
My personal opinion is to demand to Dell the original Windos Vista CD and not the update that already has created thousands of problems with its installation.
I had the same problems with the update and Dell had to replace a brand new laptop Inspiron E1705 for that. untill you are within the warranty you have all rights to be assisted It is not your fault
Ty for the reply. As I said in the previous post my mic prob has already been fixed. It was not a driver problem. What was happening is that Vista had the front port as the default for microfone input. I had to set the default to the back port and after that my mic was working.
