Multiple svchost.exe appear on Windows Task Manager, Slow performance

I have had a problem with slow systems performance at startup and some things do not seem to work right.  When restarting my computer I immediately opened the windows task manager after a minute and noticed that svchost.exe for SYSTEM was using almost all the CPU usage.  Then it stopped and most of the CPU usage went to system idle Process.  I also noticed under Image name there are multile svchost .exe names  (two for User name for SYSTEM,  2 for NETWORK SERVICE and one for LOCAL SERVICE).  Is this normal?

    Usually this is normal, but malware can use this process also.

    If mombodog's suggestions don't help, go to this MS site and download free Process Explorer. Use that instead of Task Manager to see what's really using CPU time, which may point you in the right direction.

    Also, you can try changing the setting for Microsoft updates from "Automatic" to "Notify Only". When set to automatic the updater has been linked to slow performance on certain PCs. If that resolves the problem, you'll still get notifed when MS updates are available, but you'll have to go to the MS site and download them yourself.

    I just downloaded a virus scan update from McAffee and ran a scan of my computer.  I got a message that there was an unwanted PUP.  The program name was Adware-Quickbar in File vzbb.dll with a filepath C:\\Windows\Downloaded Program...  I told McAfee to remove the program but it said that it could not becuase it was write protected (now see status: Cannot be cleaned).  What is the best way to proceed now?

    I tried again to remove the program and this time McAfee said is was cleared.  I am rescanning for unwanted programs again.  Thanks.

    Thank you for the suggestion.  McAfee found something  which I removed so hopefully this will help solve the problem.
