Actually done all that, and the telephone registration did not help. After entering all the required numbers, just got a message saying it could not be done.
I will however try this again and see if I get a different result.
The file that stores activation status may have been corrupted. Have you tried activating using the Product Key on the sticker on the side of your computer? If so and it still fails to activate, you can run a chkdsk /r from the command prompt, hit Y to schedule, then reboot; then run sfc /scannow from the command line, then try it again. If it still fails, call the number to activate by phone.
Restored to factory settings and all seems ok on the genuine windows front. Able to do windows updates again.
But...Intel Rapid Storage diagnostic thing seems to be reporting a storage problem... ARRAY0 failed. Presumably this means hard drive is dodgy and on way out???
If you had a raid setup and restored back to factory you may have broken your RAID which would report an array failure :) but it could be a bad HDD. Run diagnostics by pressing F12 when you first boot up and selecting diagnostics.
