My laptop or vista?
Ok, first off I am not as versed in computers as some. I am a gamer. I get what I need to run what I want for the next 5 years or so and I am a happy camper.
I wish this was the case now. I just received my new Inspiron 1520. Not all the bells and whistles, but enough. One would think after spending $1300 on a laptop, it would run just fine out of the box.
Not so. Anytime I run ANYTHING, it appears to lock up about halfway through. I couldnt even play minesweeper without watching my hairline crawl further and further back. Then, just as I am about to toss the thing into the street, It goes right back to running everything just fine. For about 45 seconds.
I've waited for the Vista upgrades, done a system re-install, worked with dell tech support for hours, and the only things that appears to run without problems is the dvd player.
Is this a know issue with vista? Is my new laptop really that big a waste of money?
My home made PC with an Athalon 64 3600 runs smoother than this.
Dell said they are going to replace it, but I am afraid I am just going to encounter the same problems. What should I do?

First of all, if you are a gamer, the computer will be outdated in a year, much less 5 years. Even if you were not a gamer, it would not last 5 years. The maximum any computer will last before being considered outdated is 3 years. Do not try to fool yourself. I got a 1720 about a week ago. I bought the Nvidia graphics card, 2gig RAM, 120 gig HD, etc., etc. I play games on my desktop system which has SLI video card, 8 gig RAM, 2 TB HD, etc. That would be your best solution, even though I doubt it will still be considered a mediocre system 5 years from now. In 5 years, Windows 7 will be released, and probably have Service Pack 1 available. I wonder if systems built today will be able to run it.ankurKashyap

This pretty 1520 doesn't seem to be working well. I got mine yesterday after a 10 day delay from dell. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Win 2000, but the dell website doesn't have enough drivers to offer for Win 2000. It doesn't help. When I switched back to Vista, I found out that though I had installed all the drivers in sequence, the dell utility doesn't list all of them i.e. earlier when the laptop was shipped it had check marks on almost all of the drivers listed, but now that I have reinstalled the machine, it doesn't list the drivers. My webcam doesn't work even after installing the drivers. For bluetooth, Vista says that no driver found, but I am still able to transfer files using bluetooth. I dont know whether this is a DELL issue or a VISTA??- "I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Win 2000"Without checking first to see if any Win2000 drivers were available? Sounds like neither a Dell problem or a Vista problem - more like a User problem.In any event, when you reinstalled Vista, did you install all of the drivers and utilities in this order?
