New Computer Woes

I recently purchased an Ispiron 1525 with Vista for my wife to use in her new business.  I set it up out of the box, installed McAfee anti-virus software, installed Quickbooks 2008, moved over her .pst file from Office on her old computer, hooked it into our WiFi network and connected it to a printer on my XP desktop.

Worked great for about 2 weeks and then began crashing.  Tech support suggested everything until we finally got to a full refortmat and reinstall.  Spent hours doing all of that and got back to the same place I describe above.  This was 3 days ago.  Last night it started crashing again.  Tech support suggests that it's software that is non-Vista compatible, but I've checked and it all is.

Is there something in the old .pst file or connecting to the XP network that could be causing this problem?  Is there something else that could be the problem.  I've been up until 1:30am far too many times in the last month with this thing and I cannot take much more of this!

Have you looked at the Error reports in Event Viewer? Might give you a clue to the culprit. Also, how did you "move the pst file" for Outlook? If you have Office 2007 on the new computer, you must set up a new mail profile in Control Panel and then open the old pst file in Outlook by using File, Open OL Data File. You should not have replaced any new Outlook files with the old. That causes all kinds of problems.

I exported it for the older computer and opened it on the new computer.  I did not replace anything.

I hate new computer woes. Nothin worse. Checking the event viewer is again recommended. See if you can trace the route. If you go to your control panel and check "Problem reports and solutions" and view your problem history, do you see anything there? Personally, I cant stand Mcaffee, but thats just me. I might recommend going to free.grisoft.com, and use AVG free edition. It works well, that in conjunction with windows defender, and you'll be well protected. Also what printer did you install, are the drivers for it supported by vista? I highly doubt importing a pst file would cause a system crash. I always check hardware before software in trying to fix a problem. Using a surgeprotector? Is the firmware up to date on your system and/or peripherals? Worth a shot.

    good luck

Exporting a pst file is the wrong way to do it. It corrupts the original file. You need to simply copy the old pst to the new computer and open it from within Outlook.
