No applications on desktop after login/No start menu
So here's the deal. After I startup everything looks good until I login to my only user and it brings up my desktop. All I can see is the desktop image I selected, and my mouse curser. No shortcuts, not menu bar, no start button. When I access the Task Manager there are no processes, or Apps running. If I select New Task I can access all my files, but can't start applications. System Restore did not fix it, and I can start up in Safe Mode and everything appears as it should. What should I do? Should I back up everything and format, or would a simple re-install of the OS fix my problem. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. That fills in a few blanks for me. To my knowledge I haven't downloaded anything new recently. Based on what you told me I tried to restore the system back further to May, and that seems to have all but fixed the problem. Then I loaded NAV 2004, Spyware Doctor 2.1, and Winpatrol. The OS still seems kind of shaky so I think to be safe I'm going to format the C drive, re-intall XP Home and then upgrade to XP Pro. If you think this is not a good course of action please give me a heads up. Once again, thanks for taking the time to help me.

Something you have installed recently is interfering with your boot, if you are able to see a proper desktop in Safe Mode. Have you added any new software or hardware lately, just prior to the start of the problem? A repair reinstall of XP would probably have no effect on the problem as Windows is functioning properly in Safe Mode.
Do you scan your system for spyware? That may be the cause. If not, download Ad-aware from here and Spybot from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run them and delete all the spyware they identify.
