no sound

I am back again. My computers sound has gone. I have a dell dimension 2350 running windows xp sp1. Windows wants me to update to SP2 but I am afraid. That is what took me down and out the last time. What should I do?
my sound was working fine but I have noticed that I can not configure anything in my audio device. It will not let me. I need help again.

If Windows SP2 does not install on your computer it usually means your computer has other issues.

Go to ☞ Start ☞ Run and type in CMD. At the prompt in the cmd box type in:
Cd C:\i386 and at the C:\i386> prompt, copy / paste (or type) the bold text below and [Enter]:

    expand C:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

If that fails use the text below in the cmd box, one line at a time and [Enter] after each:

    cd c:\windows\system32
    ren sndvol32.exe sndvol32.old
    copy C:\windows\system32\dllcache\sndvol32.exe c:\windows\system32
