We have five Outlook Express identities for our family. One of them suddenly will not open. When I click to open it the following message appears:
"The current identity could not be changed because one of the applications was unable to switch. Close any open dialog boxes in other applications before trying again."
I receive this whether I try to open that particular identity first or whether I switch from another identity. I will close all apps, go to my Task Manager to make sure something odd isn't running, and still no luck. I have tried deleting this identity so that I might re-create the profile and it won't even let me delete. I realize I can still re-create an identical profile without deleting the locked one, but still, I am puzzled. Anyone know what's going on and how I might unlock or delete this particular identity?
Thanks for the info. I checked the registry and yes, the user ID was missing. So I added it as suggested; however, the SOFTWARE key is also missing from under the main registry key and all the keys under SOFTWARE are also missing. So I still can't open this identity. I can't really re-create all those keys because I don't know what their values should be.
If I were to just delete the main identity key, would this allow me to at least delete the profile from Outlook Express and start over by creating a new one? Or will this simply keep the problem profile locked up and inaccesible?
Warp53, Look in control panel for Add-Remove Programs. Choose Outlook Espress and use the repair option. This will restore your missing Registry Keys. Depending on the Windows program you are using, you may be able to go back to a time when everything worked and restore function. If this happened after using a registry utility, don't use it again.
Thanks again for your reply. When I check in Add/Remove programs, Outlook Express isn't listed. Only Outlook Express Update Q0330994. And I don't find a restore option anywhere in Add/Remove. Am I missing something, paindoc?
I had already looked and didn't see it. What I did see is Microsoft Office XP Professional. Also, I still don't see the repair option you speak of for any of these programs.
