Outlook Express Question

Hello!

I am new to this forum, but not to computers.  I know more than the average person when it comes to operating computers but this problem for some reason I cannot figure out.

For starters, I have a brand new computer from DELL.  I just received it this past Tuesday and I have noticed something strange with Outlook Express.  I have a dimension E510, Windows XP, and my computer connection is dial-up - I can't get anythign else by me!

Anyway, I have sent myself several test messages different times of the day and everytime I get into Outlook Express, it automatically checks my mail for me.  While this is not a problem, when it checks, it goes so darn fast that I don't think it's really checking the mail but just going through the motions.

When I do send a test message, it takes almost an hour sometimes to reach me - I know dial up is slow, but this is ridiculous!  Plus, my other DELL computer, which is over five years old, NEVER has had this problem and test messages come within seconds of sending them to myself.

Is there a glitch in Outlook Express and Windows XP that I should know about?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

It's really strange - the way the e-mail is checked is as if the modem wasn't even hooked up.

I receive e-mails every once in a while when I know I have more e-mails waiting for me.  I do have McaFee running in the background - could that be it?

And I checked out your site - VERY COOL!!!!!!!!!!!  I LOVE IT!  Nice idea, especially for those who do not have anymore tech support or have such an old system.  Most of the information now online and even through tech's are for newer models.

    Sincerely,

No, there is no glitch in OE and XP.

You should compare the settings between the two computers for your email accounts to make sure they are the same, assuming that's what you're comparing.  If it's two different ISPs, then the comparison is not relevant.

I suspect you didn't configure the system properly to DIAL the modem to check your email, assuming you want it to do that.

Thanks on the site compliments...  :smileyvery-happy:

Click tools, options. On the general tab set check for new messages to 1 minute.
