I just finished receiving help from Tech Bertha2 of Dell Communities > Forum Home > General Boards > HijackThis and successfully rid my computer of some malware and adware virus'; it looks like that my computer is virus-free according to her. I then told her of the following problems that I'm posting here; she told me in her last message to me to "...post your problems on the XP board here at DELL" [this last message was posted 06-03-2005 11:38 AM; this problem we were working on since my first post here on 05-15-200504:03 PM]. I'm still having the following problems with my computer:
1) I cannot access the Windows XP Update site; every time that I do, I get to the window; however, it never scans and times out; consequently, nothing happens;
2) Every time I log onto the Internet after my Connect To window connects to it, a window for Windows Messenger pops up asking me if I want to update the program to a newer version; every time that I do so, I go through the update, and still am not able to Log On to this program;
3) I'm also unable to Log On to the Newsgroups in Outlook Express;
4) I'm also not able view any movie clips that I download from trusted sites, e.g. trailers from Yahoo Movies;
Please help me; do I need to uninstall and reinstall my Internet Explorer? If so, how? If not, then what do I do?
Dear Dunedin: Greetings. I'm having a problem with what you want me to do. I did all the steps; when I get to right-clicking on the ie.inf file in Windows/INF folder, and click INSTALL on the drop-down menu, I get a FILES NEEDED window that tells me "The file IEXPLORE.EXE on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 is needed" [without quote]. I've searched and searched on my OPERATING SYSTEM MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION INCLUDING SERVICE PACK 1a CD, but is no where to be found. What do I do now? Thank you. Ben J.
I`d agree that your problem is that SP1 is not on your CD but is on your machine. You would have to slipstream SP1 into your CD. Why have you not tried SP2?
1. Open up Control Panel. 2. Open Add/remove programs. 3. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools. 4. Click Add/remove. 5. Click Repair. 6. Follow the steps provided by the Repair Wizard. 7. Click OK
Dear Dunedin: Greetings. The reason why I haven't "Why have you not tried SP2?", is because the only way I can get to it is to access the Windows Update site; I loaded your program as you said. I still cannot load anything from this Windows Update site; it doesn't do anything once I get there. What do I do now? Thank you. Ben
p.s.: I went to Control Panel as you said. There is no listing on it for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools; so, I could not do any reparing as you said also.
Thank you Bev. If I get this CD, will it harm my computer to just load it onto it? Will it fix the problem of enabling me to access the Windows Update site again? Ben
Dear Duniden: I did as you said; I loaded the script, and still having problems. Also, I followed the directions as you said, and could find no where this "Repair Wizard" you were refering to. This is my second reply to you. Thank you. Ben J.

Hi,
I don`t know what virus etc you had but some of these can do a lot of damage. Making sure IE is not corrupted is as good a place to start as any.
Here is a way to repair Interner Explorer
Note: Before proceeding, ensure that your Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM is available.
From the Start menu, select Search, and choose Files or Folders.
Click the More Advanced Options item and ensure that there is a checkmark beside the Search hidden files and folder option.
In the Name field, type ie.inf
In the Look in drop-down menu, click C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search Now button. The correct ie.inf file should be located in the Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and choose Install from the drop-down menu that appears.
Restart the computer when the computer finishes copying files.
Post back if this helped or not
