Problems with WinME after installing security updates
I get the following series of errors many times when I restart my computer...sometimes I get them several times before Windows will start...running Windows ME.
MSGSRV32 caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0003:00003fa7.
NPROTECT caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0003:00003fa7.
SCANDSKW caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0003:00003fa7.
WSUP caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0003:00003f9a.
WTOOLSA caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0003:00003f9a.
STMGR caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0003:00003fa7.
AUTOCHK caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0003:0000407e.
Also, I installed a security update disk from Microsoft, and now IE and Outlook Express don't work properly (it loaded a later version than what I had), I get an error in Norton System Works, get an arror in System Restore...it won't work.
IE gives the following errors:
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0197:bff8e1ad.
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module MSHTML.DLL at 0197:034090e8.
Would reinstalling WinME from my Reinstallion Disk help? Will it reformat my hard drive and lose all my programs and files?

mcarol107,
I do think that reinstalling any OS from the original reinstallation disk will simply return your pc to the state it was when it was delivered to you, i.e., it will delete any data, software, or other files you have accumulated over time. If you have partitioned your C drive in the past, all additional partitions will be deleted as well.
If I were you, I would do the following:
1. Partition my C drive (using Partition Magic) or install a second hard disk.
2, Transfer data, etc., to the new partition/hard disk leaving WinME alone in C.
3. Get myself a copy of any OS other than WinME.
4. Reformat the C drive and install OS from Step 3.
I am truly amazed that you have stuck with WinME for as long as you have.
Good luck!
