Someone who had been given a Dell Dimension 2400 asked me if I could get their computer to work. Someone must have loaded every possible form of malware in existence on this computer. I think some of it has merged together, mutated and formed new varieties of extremely virulent computer disease. ;>)
Of course they have no CD's, etc. They do have a sticker on the side of the computer with the Windows XP Product key on it. I have previously purchased Windows XP for another computer which I own. Can I use the version I have and install it on their computer using the product key that is on the side of their computer?
If not, any suggestions other than but a new copy?
The key on the PC is ONLY for a Dell OEM CD. However, with an official Dell OEM Windows XP CD, you don't even need the key to install. It should install without asking you for the key.
I don't know if Dell will replace the CD or not (I doubt it) but there is a link in the FAQ's at the top of this section on requesting replacement CD's. However, since they are not the original owner (and it's obviously out of warranty) I would say there is only an outside chance.
You can install with the CD you have and it's product key but you won't be able to activate it with that product key (it will run for about 30 days). To get it going (legally) you will need a new full installation copy of XP with a valid product key.
You don't need the drivers CD, whatever drivers you need you can download from the Dell downloads. HERE are the downloads for the 2400 and Windows XP.
The install sequence (for a reformatted hard drive) is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers, such as the sound and video. DO NOT omit the chipset drivers or you won't be able to install the sound and other motherboard devices will not work.

OEM Operating System CD's are only LEGALLY for the PC it was delivered with. In additon the Dell CD's must see a Dell BIOS or it won't install, thus if you are building a new PC with a Retail sound card the Dell CD won't install anyway.
