i need to reformat my hard drive which has windows me on an old dell dimension L000R. any one know of any way to get like a step by step process? there are no programs on the comp. that i need and i wanted to clear everything out. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Boot with an emergency boot diskette (created by going to Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs|Startup Disk tab or downloaded from
here. When the boot completes select Start with CD-ROM support from the four options presented and at the A:\> prompt enter
format c: and . After the C:\ partition has been formatted install ME as described
here (assuming that you have the Dell reinstallation CD pictured
here).

I tried to create an emergency boot disk but i get bsod upon start up so i went to site you recommended and downloaded windows me bootdisk to a floppy, but when i attempt to start it up in the dell it says non system disk error replace and strike a key to continue.
i know...its just that the computer is pretty messed up and i wanted to completely reformat and start with a clean slate...instead of installing xp over me. also i dont have an upgrade cd...i have an installation cd.
If you want to install XP, there is no need to reinstall Windows ME. You can do a clean installation of XP using an XP Upgrade CD. See the information
here. It's much easier than installiing ME.
Read
this part of the link I provided. The process of installing XP
includes formatting the hard disk. You delete the existing C:\ partition (where ME is currently installed), create a new one, format it, then install the operating system. It's all done in one process rather than through FDISK, FORMAT, and INSTALL as was the case with ME.

Either will work. You could have saved some money by purchasing the Upgrade version but that's the only difference in their functionality for installing XP.
