"We have one XP CD that came with the computer and one version that did not.  If we reinstall the version that did not come with the computer would it still wipe out all my files?  Which is safer to reinstall?"

 

It will make no difference which of the XP CDs you use to reinstall XP, when you carry out a clean reinstall, all the files are removed.   A Repair Reinstall of XP should leave your files intact.
