Hi - I've got XP Pro running on a Dell 4600. I've got the Remote Desktop enabled on my desktop and have loaded the Remote Desktop application on my laptop. I can connect when I'm home, within my LAN BUT when I go outside and try to get in through my Netgear wireless router I get a message that "The client could not connect to the remote computer" I've done a little research and it appears I'll need to have port 3389 "forward" any request and possibly create a virtual server on my PC since the IP address is dynamic. Before I head off into this is there something I'm missing or do I have to go through all the port forwarding, virtual server tasks?
Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Yes you do need Port 3389 but I wold think since you are behind the router, even with DHCP, the desktop is still getting the same IP Address 99.99999% of the time. Try using the NetBios name instead.
Thanks so much for the information. So, if I've got this right I can get the IP address that the router gets from the Roadrunner (my ISP) (through ipconfig) and forward port 3389 to this address and I'll be OK almost all the time. Does this sound correct?
Hi - Thanks for the information. I finally got it working - but it was more complicated than I thought it would be (what isn't). First I had to forward port 3389 to my server IP addrerss. I noticed that the "Lease" on my IP address is good for only three days so then I had to create a virtual server using Dyndns.org so that even if my IP address changes it will always point to the right IP address.
If I didn't have a router this would have all been unnecessary, but I have, and need a router.
Alls well that ends well, I guess.
Again, thanks for the help - I really appreciate it.
