Restoring Hard Drive

Hello.

Computer model: Dimension 2350 (Purchased in the early spring of 2003)

About a week ago whenever I logged on to my computer instead of the normal desktop I had a black screen with an error spyware message. I haven't made any drastic system changes in several months so I do not even know what prompted this screen.

I ran both Ad-aware and Norton Anti-virus and nothing changed. (Both the programs were updated before I ran them.) I also defragmented the hard drive and did disk cleanup. They made my computer faster but didn't get rid of the problem.

I also realized that I had a lot of garbage on the computer that has been placed there to due to spyware. I tried to have them not launch with the setup but the volume of files that are opening is so high that I am getting nowhere. (They are many duplicates of just of few tasks.)

I was contemplating inserting the ResourceCD to clear off the entire computer, but I was hoping there was a less drastic solution to my problem.

I am leaving for college in a few weeks and I wary of moving to campus with this problem and logging onto the university-wide network for fear of hurting other's computers.

Has anyone hade similar problems? Also, is this something I should attempt or should I just take it to a professional?

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated because I am getting frustrated.

Thank you,
Kate

i may have the same or similar problem that you are experiencing with your pc. one day out of no where my desktop was a black screen with red writing that said something like warning system shut down spyware detected. i tried everything to remove it. even went out and bought the new nortons 2005 hoping it would take care of the problem. i finally gave up a few weeks ago and asked a friend who works on computers to see what he could do. i am still waiting to get my notebook back. if you get yours up and running please let me know what you did to get it fixed, i'll do the same.

    Try the HiJack forum here.

It may lead you to an answer other than having to reformat and reinstall.

You may also want to try sbybot. Its free and in conjunction with Adaware -- will detect and fix most problems

    Hello.

I pretty much got the computer fixed. The trojan was called PS Guard and it was advertising some phony spyware. The files that I deleted that fixed the problem were intell32.exe, tsyssu2r.exe, and r.exe.

    I found HiJackThis helpful too.

Hope it works out for you.
